Port Vale have appointed experienced football executive Micky Moore as their new Sporting Director. The move is a key part of the club's rebuild following relegation from League One last season, with Moore taking overall charge of the football department, including recruitment, scouting, and the development pathway.

Chief Executive Matt Hancock confirmed the appointment, which is the first of its kind to be publicly approved by the Independent Football Regulator. Moore arrives with a strong track record from previous senior roles at Cheltenham Town and Shrewsbury Town.

Moore's background and experience

Micky Moore spent four and a half years at Cheltenham Town, initially in recruitment before becoming Director of Football. During his tenure, the club won the League Two title in the 2020/21 season and achieved their highest-ever League One finish the following year. He also worked in the recruitment department at Birmingham City and spent two-and-a-half years as Director of Football at Shrewsbury Town before leaving last summer.

Club context and vision

Moore's primary task is to assess and improve Port Vale's entire football operation. He takes over a club in a difficult position, currently 23rd in the standings with only five points from their opening seven League Two matches. The team's recent form shows just one win in their last five games, and they have scored a league-low three goals this season, a rate of one goal every 210 minutes. His appointment signals a strategic shift under the ownership of Carol and Kevin, aiming to create a consistent and sustainable structure for the long term.

Matt Hancock stated: "Micky brings a huge amount of football experience to the club and we’re delighted to welcome him to Vale Park."

Moore said he is excited by the challenge, drawing parallels with his successful project at Cheltenham. "I can't wait to get going. Vale are a big club with big potential," he said.

The new Sporting Director's first interview will be available on PVTV later this week.
