Port Vale are mourning the death of former club captain Doug Loft, who has died at the age of 39 following a medical emergency. The midfielder, who made 196 appearances for the Valiants, passed away at the weekend, with tributes pouring in from across the football community.
Gillingham, where Loft played after leaving Vale Park, confirmed his death in a statement. The club extended its thoughts to his wife Laura, their children Freya and Amelie, and his wider family and friends. Port Vale said Loft would be remembered fondly for his achievements, commitment, and leadership.
Loft's Vale Park legacy
Doug Loft signed for Port Vale in 2009 under manager Micky Adams, who had previously worked with him at Brighton. Over five seasons, he became a central figure, scoring 19 goals and captaining the side for two years. His performances were recognised when he was named the club's player of the season for the 2011-12 campaign.
Upon leaving Burslem in 2014, he returned to his native Kent to join Gillingham. Former teammates have been quick to pay their respects. Leon Legge, who played with Loft at Gillingham, posted on social media. "Life is so short," Legge said. "A former team-mate passed away and literally only a couple of years between us. 39 is way too young."
Jamie O'Hara, who both coached and played alongside Loft at non-league Billericay Town, shared his shock. "Devastated to hear the news of my former teammate and a player I managed at Billericay," O'Hara said.
Club prepares to honour a captain
Port Vale have requested permission from the EFL for players to wear black armbands and observe a minute's silence ahead of their next League Two fixture. The team, currently 22nd in the table with eight points from eight games, host Chesterfield this Saturday.
The planned tribute will take place before a key home game for Andy Crosby's side, who are looking to build on a recent 1-0 win over Grimsby Town. The club has shared a video compilation of Loft's time at Vale Park on its official channels. Supporters can view the team's upcoming schedule, including the Chesterfield match, on the club's fixtures page. The squad will take to the field on Saturday with their former captain in their thoughts.

The EFL has granted permission for players to wear black armbands and for a minute's silence to be held, Port Vale confirmed. Former manager Micky Adams, who signed Loft, told reporters: "There was nobody more proud to be captain of the Vale." The Valiants, currently 22nd in League Two, will honour their former captain before kick-off.
